A Chicago Dental Lab
This Chicago-based dental lab had a moderate sale of about $2 million in 2003. Due to
difficulty in getting qualified technicians at reasonable costs, the dental lab decided to
outsource some of its work to China. AsiaNetworks advised to focus on higher-end
products in-house while contracting out the more standard PFMs to China. We
developed procedures for the lab and its clients to use, helped with FDA registration, and
negotiated deals with a large Chinese dental lab. The results have been exceeding
everyone's expectations. The technicians at the Chicago lab now spend more time working
on high-end products that give them more satisfaction and the managers are happy to
reach more clients with more products and a smaller payroll. Dentists and their patients
are also happy with China's superb quality. The average turn-around time of less than 10
days door to door allows dentists to schedule 2-week appointments with confidence. All in
all, the lab is pleased with the improved morale and profit, their dentists are happy about
the shorter chair time, and the patients are smiling with their new teeth!
Haiyu International
Haiyu International is the world authority in brine shrimp flakes and solving pellet feed.
Since early 1980s, Haiyu has been a pioneer in the shrimp farming industry, providing
shrimp food at various stages of shrimp growth. In 2003, AsiaNetworks and Haiyu
developed a marketing strategy that specifically targeted the shrimp farmers in Southeast
and South Asia with an integrated total package approach. Haiyu began to introduce
modern technologies into shrimp farming and worked with owners to deploy the new
technologies with great success. Haiyu also became equity partners in some cases,
helping shrimp farmers achieve a better yield. The integrated total package approach
differentiated Haiyu's products from its competitors and increased its growth and profit
margin.
ZPMC in China
AsiaNetworks developed a training program for ZPMC, the largest port machinery
manufacturer in the world, in 1999. All ZPMC's middle and upper managers received
training for managing it explosive growth in the late 1990s and early 21st century. At the
time, ZPMC was faced with opportunities in North American ports as they scrambled to
keep up with a growing appetite for Asian goods and needed to upgrade and expand their
port capacities. ZPMC had difficulty using modern management systems to control costs
and progress, manage multiple customization projects, and budget its cash flow to
provided needed capital for growth. AsiaNetworks designed a practical curriculum and
worked with an American university to deliver a crash course for ZPMC. The result was
that it secured a few large contracts from the U.S. and Europe, developed a new method
to build and transport the final products (primarily huge ship to shore container cranes but
some rubber tire yard cranes).
Cal Poly MBA International Study Tour-China
When Cal Poly Orfalea College of Business wanted to take their students to China, they
called Dr. John Wu. Together with their champion, Dr. Chris Carr, Associate Dean of
OCOB Graduate Programs, they put together a study tour that took 33 MBA students to
CHina for 17 days in the summer of 2006. They visited multinationals and local companies
in major cities and rural areas in China, interviewed managers from across a wide range
of businesses, and had fun sight-seeing along the way. Companies like HSBC, Price
Waterhouse Cooper, RR Donnelley, CBRE, Microsoft, and Sun Microsystems opened
their doors and extended warm welcomes to the students. This program provided
graduate students a rare opportunity to learn from an array of global executives. Students
become better managers when they understand that their business decisions carry a
profound global impact. Because of the excellent feedback from the students in the
inaugural trip, the study tour was repeated in 2007 and will extended to India in 2008.
